His mercy – The only medicine

Vijay Chakravarthy

It was the night of the 13th of July 2020. I felt sick with extremely high body temperature and body pain. I coughed so severely that it brought out a lot of sputum. At that time, I was staying at my mother’s house, as it was a lockdown period. I did not have transportation and could not even go to the medical shop. A friend of mine from our church, who is like a brother to me got me medicines. But my condition grew worse day by day and I was still coughing out blood.

My wife and brother-in-law rushed and took me for Laboratory investigations. The chest x-ray revealed a severely damaged lung indicating Covid Pneumonia. A pulmonologist told us that any delay in admitting me could cost my life and that I needed steroids, blood thinners and oxygen support in addition to anti -viral as it was a severe case of Covid pneumonia. I wished my mom ‘bye’ and told her that she will not be able to see me alive as I had no hope that I would come back home alive.

As we finished the admission formalities and as I was waving to my wife, I heard a loud cry . Someone had died and their body came down the ramp. I just could not pray.

At the critical time, the lifesaving medicines were not available in the hospital pharmacy as there was a great demand for it due to the pandemic. So, we had to contact several stockists and by God’s grace one stockist had it and my brother-in-law managed to reach the medicines to the hospital before midnight. God led and used him miraculously.

The next morning at around 10am, the blood results came and my interleukin which should be around 6 pg./L was around 900 pg./L , which is 130 times more than normal. The doctor informed my brother-in-law and my wife that the chances of saving my life were very remote, but had the slightest ray of hope on using an immunosuppressant. The probability of obtaining the life saving drug, which was in great demand was very bleak. However, God again proved that He could make a way where there seems to be no way. Past midnight my brother-in-law managed to find someone who gave two vials of it. After handing it over to the doctor and driving back home, he received a call from the hospital informing that the first dose was administered to me.

There was a storm in heaven as many people known and unknown to me, all over the globe –  especially the EMC family and many other churches, friends, servants of God, were praying that I would open my eyes the next morning. I woke up, immediately my blood sample was taken by afternoon and the unbelievable happened!! The reading which read 900 pg./L the previous day had dropped to just 100 pg./L. The second vial of the drug was administered. The reading came further down, close to normal the next day.

However, I was still bringing out blood in my sputum, so they continued giving me blood thinners and as I was feeling breathless, they suggested Non-invasive ventilator (NIV) support for me. I was terrified because the next would be Invasive ventilation, ECMO (extracorporeal membrane Oxygenation) and I feared death. Till that very moment, I couldn’t really pray. When I knew I was at the end of the road, I just cried very loudly. Till then mercy was only surrounding me but at that moment mercy touched me and light entered the room.

I was on NIV support morning, afternoon and evening as my lungs were 88% damaged and I was surviving with only 12% vitality. After 5 days, my lungs started getting cleared and my saturation was slowly improving. From August 1st, 2020, I was not on oxygen support and was kept on observation till August 4th, 2020. On the 5th of August 2020, I was miraculously discharged.

The doctor who treated me was not a Christian. He testified that something beyond human power has brought me back to life. He stated that nobody with so much lung damage has survived Covid Pneumonia. It is clearly the hand of GOD which has done this great miracle in my life. I THANK GOD ALMIGHTY for this unmerited favour and EVERYBODY FOR YOUR LOVE, PRAYERS AND CONCERN. I have failed in life many times, but I know one thing that – the mercy of God is the only medicine for all problems in life and His mercy is the only medicine that has life giving power.
