We all want prayer but very few want to pray. The weakest link of the church or a person is the failure to pray. Someone has said that

‘Satan trembles when he sees the weakest Christian on his knees.’

But what is prayer?

In the Old Testament, it is calling upon the name of God. People called on the name of the God. (Gen 4:26). Abraham called on the name of the LORD (Gen 21:33) Prayer is interceding for others just like Moses did (Exo 32:11).  It was a tempestuous exercise of the Spirit for Jeremiah the prophet who was agitated when he learnt of a plot against him (Jer 18: 19-23) It was a spontaneous outburst of confession, praise and petition of the individual in the psalms.

In the New Testament for Jesus our model, it was communication with God, laying bare his heart before the Father. It was bringing before God the needs of people.

Why pray?

We pray Because God has hard wired us to pray. When he touches our spirit, we are in a new relationship with God through Jesus Christ which ignites the desire to pray. We pray because God always answers prayer, and it pleases him when we pray. Jesus commanded us to pray without ceasing and to watch and pray for our wellbeing. Lack of prayer is sin as Samuel told the people (1Sa 12:23). We pray to exercise our restored dominion in Christ that was lost by Adam and fulfil our responsibilities in the spiritual warfare.

Corrie Ten Boom said, “When a Christian shuns fellowship with other Christians, the devil smiles, when he stops studying the Bible, the devil laughs. When he stops praying, the devil shouts for joy.

Since prayer is very powerful so let us pray sincerely, without ceasing. Let us make a difference in the world in which we live through powerful prayer.
