One of the four emphasis of urban mission is reaching out to young people outside the church or the unchurched in the city of Chennai. EPL is an outreach initiative to reach out to young people through the medium of sports.
EPL was started in September 2019 to help young people to consider following Christ even other faiths and bring the young people of our church closer to God one step at a time. The first season was played with people within the church, for 10 weeks where the church and everyone got to know what it was to play as a church. The enthusiasm among the people was so high, something we never imagined. It brought the entire church together, young and old, men and women along with children and pastors. Everyone involved desired not to miss even a day. We had 6 teams and played 6 sports – Badminton, Football, Volleyball, Throwball, Cricket and Captains Ring. The first season focused more on strengthening the bond within the church which was attended by 90 people. This was played at Plus sports every Wednesday from 8pm to 10pm.
The second season started in January 2020 where we focussed on reaching out to people young and old outside the church. To start with each team was asked to bring any 5 of their friends of different persuasions of faith. The teams came together, discussed and brought friends from other faiths and EPL was played together thereby giving us a clear opportunity to be a witness and testimony. The teams also started meeting outside the playground in one of the members home, where they fellowshipped with each other. Season 2 had about 160 people participating.
This has created many great bonds and relationships with people of other faiths. The mission of EMC is to reach out to people and it is such a great joy to see young people giving their life to Christ and walking according to his plan and purpose.
